The Consequences of a Dirty Air Filter (It’s Not What You Think)

June 3rd, 2019

close-up-view-of-pleated-air-filterIf you think the only reason you should care about your HVAC system’s air filter is because of the allergens and particles in your air, you’d only be partially correct.

Many homeowners assume that a dirty air filter is a problem because it keeps your air dirty, and that this is why technicians tell you to change it every 1-3 months. So, if you aren’t suffering from allergies at the moment, that means your air filter is fine where it is, right? Well, not necessarily!

While helping your indoor air quality is a small benefit of these air filters, their purpose isn’t entirely for that. Their purpose is actually to protect the interior components of your air conditioner and heating system. Keep reading to learn more about this, and how a dirty air filter actually impacts your life—or at least the life of your air conditioner.

Humidity and Its Impact on Your AC

May 20th, 2019

woman-sitting-in-front-of-fan-cooling-offDid you know that excessive humidity can actually hurt your air conditioner?

Humidity is essentially moisture—moisture that in our area comes with the high summer temperatures we’re all very familiar with. This moisture makes us uncomfortable, and essentially the only way it dissipates is by lowering the temperature. So, it stands to reason that you’d turn on your air conditioner and set it to the lowest possible temperature, right?

The problem with this is that it makes your air conditioner work harder and harder as summer progresses, and as a result, the AC system is strained and accumulates wear and damage. Plus, the humidity isn’t effectively removed, so you’ll still be uncomfortable.

Are Your Air Ducts Doing You Harm?

April 22nd, 2019

inside-an-air-ductThe short answer is, they could be, if they’re too dirty!

Chances are, you don’t actually think about the condition of your home’s ductwork very often. After all, the ductwork in most homes is hidden from sight, traveling through spaces between walls and through the attic. Exposed ducts might look fine in commercial buildings with high ceilings, but that’s not the appearance for a cozy and pleasant home.

Residential air ducts need some consideration though. These ducts can suffer damage that can lead to poor heating and cooling performance that result in high utility bills. But physical damage isn’t the only way they can suffer—or rather, cause you to suffer. Dirty ducts are a problem too.

It’s Never Too Early to Prevent Air Conditioning Breakdowns!

March 11th, 2019

ac-system-being-worked-onOur hottest temperatures are still a good ways off. But don’t let our relatively cool spring weather trick you into thinking that you don’t need to worry about your air conditioner just yet. When summer does arrive in earnest, it can sneak up on you. And even though the warmer weather is generally pretty welcomed, you won’t get to enjoy it as much indoors if you need AC repair in Norman, OK.

The best way to prevent this? By scheduling air conditioning maintenance, sooner than later.

There are some basic maintenance chores you can do on your own. This includes changing the air filter in your air conditioner as needed. Typically, this means every 1-3 months during periods of use (and if you used a furnace this winter, the air filter is probably shared between the two systems, so it’s actually a great idea to change it now!) It’s also a good idea to remove any debris from around your outdoor condenser unit, to help airflow.

Don’t Let the End of Winter Be the End of Your Furnace

February 11th, 2019

woman-covering-her-mouth-in-concernTemperatures are staying chilly for just a little bit longer, and then we’ll be able to turn off our furnaces and focus on our air conditioners instead. This means that if your furnace has any repair needs right now, they can just wait until the next time you need your furnace this fall, right? Wrong.

Delaying furnace repairs could mean the end of your furnace. It could also mean misdiagnosing something as a furnace problem when it’s actually a thermostat or ductwork issue—both of which will negatively impact your air conditioner as well. More on that below!
